So, i’m looking to purchase a Civic, specifically ‘12, but i’m not sure about whether to get an auto or manual transmission? Does anyone own a manual, and if so what has been your experience? (Is it well made, etc. ?)

I’ve been driving manual for a while

2012 is a lower quality year for the Civic in general whether it be the transmission driving dynamics quality ride cabin etc. but Honda makes better manuals compared to their automatic no doubt but the 5 speed auto in those years wasn't unreliable or anything its just that you are better off with a manual transmission, on the rare occasion you find one in good shape.

Thanks for the info. So which year would you recommend ? What other cars should i be looking at ? Budget under 15k

Have you checked out the 2015-2019 Toyota Corolla sedan? They are pretty reliable. Also a 2012 Civic should is worth like 6k. For Civic under 15k you could be able to get a 2017+ one with the 2.0 engine. 2013 was a refresh and would be better but that generation in general had engine problems. I'd go Corolla. There is also the Honda Fit, msrp of a a brand new one with a manual transmission for 17k and 2020 was the last year so you should be able to get a BRAND NEW one under 15k.

Without a doubt get the manual. Honda automatics have never been really strong to begin with.

I've driven both auto and manuals on this gen of Civics, and the autos can be a bit jerky with age if they weren't babied from the start. Also, the shifter feels like every other manual Honda, crisp and clean (if they weren't abused and slammed for 10 years of course) Manual is your best bet in my opinion.

Manual by far.

The reliability ratings were just as good for the 2012 Civic. For the main question I would get a manual transmission. Honda's automatic transmissions do not have the best reputation. While they were much better in 2012 then earlier years and much better than Jatco they are still not nearly as good as Aisin. However, Honda manual transmissions are absolutely bulletproof. A manual transmission 2012 Civic can last you forever.

I would go with the manual since you are already used to driving one.

For longevity, if you plan to keep the car as long as possible go with the manual.
