my sister in law says her 13 Subaru Legacy with 68,000 miles makes a noise going fast. Could it be something like a bad bearing? She doesn’t hear it at low speed.

It could be a lot of things, need more details and if possible a recording of the noise.
I can’t get a recording at this time but it is coming from the left front wheel. the faster she goes the louder it gets and occasionally when turning. Her father who is a mechanical engineer even said it’s likely a sign of a bad wheel bearing but hasn’t physically checked it yet
It seems likely it is a wheel bearing. Another test is to veer from one side to the other (someplace it's safe like an empty parking lot), front wheel bearing noise will change as the side load on the bearings change.
