engine revs going down hill in cruise above what seems normal , should i stop using cruise in the hills , will i hurt it , cvt transmission , le trim , 17,000 miles , dealer says this is normal , love the car , thanks
Stop using it it might be in quotes normal it's just that they aren't that good transmission and I wouldn't tempt fate by using it
While we’re on the subject, Scotty. Is it safe to use cruise control when traveling up hill?
My transmission goes into a higher gear, and revs higher, to try and keep the vehicle up to the set mph.
I don’t know about you, but I prefer being in full control of my vehicle. Like Scotty said, why tempt fate & regret using the cruise control after something breaks?
If the machine is doing something unexpected, disconnect it & take manual control of the vehicle.
When you have cruise on, and going downhill, and your speed exceeds a pre-determined threshold above the cruise "set" point, the transmission (or CVT) goes into engine braking. That is, the engine compression is used to slow the vehicle, which saves excessive use of the brakes themselves. To make this possible, engine rpm's will increase appreciably.
If you do not want to use engine braking, disengage cruise and gently but repeatedly press the brake pedal to keep vehicle at a safe speed. It is NOT recommended to continuously apply the brakes all the way down the hill.
I've had a 2019 Corolla LE w/ CVT for almost 7 months. I have never used cruise control on it though. However, my CVT transmission going down pretty steep hills does often times go into the "engine braking"/"lower gear. From what I understand, the cars computer/transmission (as I've learned from Scotty that CVT transmissions are pretty much all computer run) feels that its going down a steep enough hill that it will put it into the engine braking for the time you go down certain hills. I've noticed it many times on mine especially since where I live (in Pennsylvania), there's a good amount of hills pretty much everywhere. The RPM's do go up, how high depends on how steep the hill is and how the cars computer senses it. Mine doesn't do it all the time, and it usually doesn't do it going down small hills, but I believe that is a normal thing. My Dads 2018 and my friends 2017 corolla's both with CVT do it as well at times. Depending on how steep the hill is, I believe its just the Sport mode or "B" gear (maximum engine braking) briefly kicking in while going down the hill. So basically mine does it, at times going down certain hills, even when its not in cruise control.
I personally rarely use cruise control on my car for the most part, and the previous cars I've driven, unless I'm driving on the highway for sometime where there is not much traffic and I know I can stay at that same speed for at least a fair amount of time.
