My father-in-law and I are going to start replacing the brake master cylinder soon. Will DOT 3 brake fluid work, when we get the new one in? It's a 1960 AMC Rambler with 36,000 original miles, and it's all stock. It has an automatic transmission.
Yes, DOT3 brake fluid is what I've always used in my old Ramblers.
I felt like I knew the answer to my question already, but I wasn't totally sure, lol. I figured I'd ask someone with little more knowledge than me when it comes to old cars.
At the time that car was made it was primarily British cars using natural rubber seals in the brake system that needed a different type of fluid. (Also a few European cars.) Everything else used DOT3. Here's a pretty good rundown on brake fluid:
