1968 Mustang Tranny issues

I bought a 1968 Mustang 302 V8 automatic.  Everything works great except when you put it in drive or even 1 or 2 it will take a lot of pedal pushing to do it. But as soon as you pop it in reverse it’ll go. What could be causing this issue?

Well if it's full of fluid then generally means the transmission is worn especially something like the oil pump inside the transmission is wearing it has to build up pressure before it takes off which often affects forward gears more than reverse

The transmission was full of fluid, was completely black And clunky . Would this cause it not to go into gear?

Internal transmission failure. Parts are worn out. Parts are readily available as are replacement remanufactured transmissions (with a warranty) and torque converters.

It's possible for a do it yourselfer to rebuild...some tedious snap rings and lot of parts that have to be put in exactly the correct spots, while working in a pristine environment soaked with clean transmission fluid.
