Went and looked at a 1976 GMC Jimmy today, automatic, odometer says 39,000 km but its definitely been around a time or two. Pretty rough but I've seen worse. Up here in Canada, salt has gotten to everything...started it up and it rolled back when it was in park. Hit brakes and it stopped. Reverse did not work at all, drive worked sort of. It has a plow on it. Not sure if this means the linkage is bad or if the trans needs a rebuild. The shifter has a lot of play in it and slightly moves around even when it was up in park position.

Well, if the shifter has a lot of slap could be that the linkage is just worn. Just realize being that old you're looking at a major project if you want to drive it seriously in most cases
