1986 f-250 6.9 idi manual.

Hi, I saw a truck for sale for 1500 bucks. It runs and drives.
im trying to see if the 6.9 is a good motor.

it would be my first diesel motor, so I wanna get something I can learn to work on but not have a huge money pit.

how reliable are they? What should I look for when inspecting it.

thank you

I think you're probably biting off more than you can chew, at this point. At 38 years old, that thing is practically fossilized. At this point, it's up to the owners' maintenance over the years, any "reliability" it once had is basically a mute point, now. A LOT can happen in 38 years. A once in a while pickup that you drive on the weekends, sure, don't think about daily driving that, especially since you've never messed with diesel engines before.

Check the frame, first and foremost. If it's rotted, walk away.
