Why is my 2000 Toyota Corolla VE burning oil?

Hey Scotty!

I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla VE (1ZZ-FE engine) with 153,600 miles.  I inherited the car from my father and I took possession of it at about 135,000 miles.  It seems to burn about a quart or two of oil by every 5,000-mile oil change.  I use top-tier gasoline and use premium oil.  I've also changed the PCV valve and timing chain tensioner, but the oil consumption remains.  I did notice that there's a considerable amount of black soot when I wipe inside the tail pipe.  What other causes could there be for the oil consumption?  What other options could I try to remedy, or do I have to live with it?

Thanks!

Engine wear. (The thing is nearly 25 years old.) Stuck oil control rings.

You could try ATS Carbon Clean which Scotty recommends.
