I have a 1987 Celica GT convertible with a 3S-FE engine and an A140L automatic tranny (I too wished it had a manual) with 189K miles on it. I still see the 3S-FE direct from Japan (JDM) being advertised; is this legit? Also, I've had an A140L fail to shift in higher forward gears due to that plastic governor on another car in the past, and I don't wish for a repeat of that. Should I have the tranny rebuilt, the plastic governor replaced, or buy a reman tranny, and which reman companies prove the most reliable?

I would go reman. Get the one that has the best warranty.
