1987 Chevy Suburban w/ Diesel Engine

Scotty,

Looking at buying a 1987 Chevrolet Suburban 4X4, its got the 6.2L diesel engine, and an auto trans. It has only 78k miles. I would be buying it from a classic car consignment dealer... It is in beautiful condition. What are your thoughts? Any experience with these vehicles and those older diesel engines? Good trannies? I would use it for a family vehicle and sometimes for towing a travel trailer cross country.

Thank you and have a blessed day!

Well they are decent vehicles but that thing is so old there's no way I'd buy something that old with an old diesel engine that depend upon it for driving big distances with my family it's just too old

Scotty,

Thank you for your reply, I will take your advice into consideration. Have a great evening!

I would advise against it.  My cousin had a 1983 with the 6.2 Liter Diesel and it was a disaster.  Truck was like a tank but the engine was a disaster.  Funny story as he actually became good friends with the local diesel mechanic due to it.

Thanks for the advise, I am surprised that the 6.2 diesel would be a disaster, their later diesel engines are bulletproof. Maybe his was a lemon built on a Monday or a Friday..

Not a good era for GM diesels. And it would be awfully slow, especially on any kind of hill. You’d be happier with a 90’s era gas suburban. Or swap it for a 454
