what is the best engine oil to use in my 1987 2.9L v6 4x4 ford ranger
thank you so much
does it say in the owner's manual or on the oil filler cap?
no its not on the oil filler cap and don't have the owners manual the previous owner lost it
If you can't find an owners manual in a junkyard order one on eBay.
@billybob these days they are free on the internet. Takes me 5 seconds.
I always used 10w30 in mine. Once, I tried 5w30. The lifters would bang for about a second upon startup when it was cold outside. My dad always used 10w30 Castrol GTX with a Fram filter, I used 10w30 Castrol high mileage with a Motorcraft filter. We changed it every 5-6,000 miles or so or 6 months.
If I still had that truck, I’d probably use a good synthetic blend 10w30 and a Motorcraft filter.
Most vehicles of that era specified 10W30 or 10W40 oils.
I got creative and did a quick search for oil on AutoZone's website. Looked up the 2.9L Cologne V6 in the '87 Ranger, and it brought up 5W-30 as the required oil.
Guess it's an early adopter of lighter-weight oil.
