1991 chevy 2500, blown diff

I have a 91 Chevy k2500 with about 118k miles on it. Differential recently shattered two gears. Ive found rebuilt rear ends between $650-750 with similar miles to the truck. I could also buy new ring and pinion along with a rebuild kit for only a little less. Which would be the better option?

Edit: Forgot to add that I do have a friend with over 15 years experience that'll be helping/teaching.

well if you can get brand new for less money than old and used then.... isn't that a no-brainer?
