Scotty, I have a 95 Riviera and the check engine light is on, the car is running fine but I want to know what the code is.  I believe its OBD1 but has an OBD 2 port. What equipment do I really need to check the codes. Thanks a lot and I love your videos, been a fan for years.

Thats a funny year as it was GM's transition from OBD 1.5 to OBD 2. If it is indeed OBD 2 then you should try Autozone and get it scanned for codes as they do it free as long as your not in CA.  Other automotive parts places will do they same if they are so equipped.  I would do that first before you purchase any scanner.

It's definitely not OBD 2, yeah I just read that it was an OBD 1.5 but then how do I get the codes read? The paperclip trick doesn't work on this one, I've tried lol'

You can buy the Tech2 scanner originaly but they are not cheap as opposed to buying the Chinese version..which I did to diagnose my Hummers AC/Heat problems) for far far less. Around $200 on eBAY. If you want to go econo..you can buy a used Actron scanner obd 1.5 scanner for much less. Which model?...I posted on this subject forgot which model. But do a internet search as well as GM sites which deal with those transition GM vehicles talk and discuss about OBD 1.5 about.

In 1995 GM was using up old OBD1 components and updating to OBD2...some were a mix of both OBD1.5...you can get blink codes at check engine light with 12 pin connector. GM dealers had a tool called "Tech 2"...good luck finding a dealer with one of those. Independent shop may have one. http://www.automotiveforums.com/t307153-new_info_1995_non_obd_ii_16_pin.html
