Greetings! I have a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire, still running strong. The problem I have is that it turns the Check Engine light on rare occasions and it is basically at highways speed when, say, I've run for an extended time at 65 MPH (speed limit) and take the foot of the gas pedal to decelerate for going downhill, etc... When this happens, the cooling fan is activated and will not turn off until the car is switched off. Whn the car is turned back on, the CHK Engine light stays off and everything is normal again. The shops I have gone to check the code scan tools can not communicate with my car's computer. According to the manual, it has an OBD2 connector but ODB1 code set. So no one around can tell me what trouble code I am getting and what the problem might be! so the question is: What is going on? and, What scanner I can buy confidently knowing that it will work with my car? Thanks!

A Tech2 (factory GM scan tool for that time period).
Without a scanner, for OBD1 you should be able to use the car's blink code procedure.
