Hello

I have a 1996 ford explorer with some steering issues. Power steering seems to work irregularly, sometimes it drives with no issues other times I will have no power steering at all. Trying to decide whats the best place to start with this, and how to diagnose whats going on.

First I would check the power steering fluid level and for any leaks. Also check the tightness of the power steering belt, a slipping belt can cause intermittent losses of power steering. Is the pump making any noises?

Well, it was leaking reddish fluid from the front end. Replaced the line, turned out to be transmission fluid which solved my transmission issue but still left me wondering about the steering. The acc belt is in decent shape, no cracks. Power steering pump isn't making any unusual noises, some groaning when the wheel is turned all the way. Fluid is topped off as well.

How many miles does the car have?
