Acura MDX 2012 SH-AWD - Timing belt question

Topic starter

Hello Scotty/Anyone

I have an Acura MDX 2012. 88K+ miles

Owners manual state that replacing timing belt is at 7 years or 105,000 miles

It is already 8 years old with less than 105K miles. Still running excellent with minimal maintenance.

Should I change it soon or should I wait for the code to come out for timing belt replacement?

Any advise is appreciated.

Sincerely.

@cpain
Timing belts is one of those maintenance items you don't want to prolong. I would recommend changing at your earliest convenience even though you haven't reached the mileage the timing belt does wear due to its rubber composition.

Noted. I guess I have to do it on the next interval.

And it comes with water pump and tensioner job. As per @lol_why they have to be change too. need to save some money for that as I still have 50% of oil life.

I'll skip the Valve clearance adjustment since the engine runs smooth and no leaks.

@cpain
Just do it around 105k miles doesn’t have to be exact

Noted. Since it has 88K miles on it. I assume doing it around 95K+ wont hurt. I think it will be the 2nd maintenance interval from today.

Plan on doing the full timing belt service soon. These are interference engines, if the belt snaps, you'll need a top end rebuild. Just finished a top end rebuild on a J series few weeks back due to its belt snapping. Not a fun job.

Still got 50% oil life. I guess I have to do it on the next scheduled maintenance. Should I replace the water pump and tensioner as well?

Service Manual says check water pump and tensioner. If hey will open up the engine mind as well change it? Or take a chance on them?

Please advise.

@lol_why
Always do water pump, tensioner and idler when doing timing belt. You don't want to be charged twice if to go back in there if the water pump goes bad in a couple years. Take care of it while they're easily accessible.

@lol_why
Understood. I guess I have to make the 50% oil last while I am saving some money for parts replacements.

Thanks again.

@lol_why
btw on the service manual I guess I'll skip the Valve clearance adjustment since the engine runs smooth, barely broken in for an Acura with 88K miles.
