Hi Scotty,
I hope you had a nice Labor Day weekend. I have a 2017 Toyota Highlander 3.5L automatic gas engine with 124K miles. I started experiencing whining noise during acceleration few weeks back. It's not that loud but loud enough to notice it. I know that there's a UA80 class action lawsuit out there about the 8-speed trans issue. I just did a drain/fill last week using the Toyota ATF WS trans fluid. The initial drain was dark brown fluid(obviously) and the second drain which is the excess after doing the drain/fill process was a bit darker red(ish). I do not know if it's the first time it was done because I bought the truck used. I am planning another drain/fill this week or the next using AISIN ATF0WS.
Do you think I am doing the right thing? Have you had other people reaching out to you with the same issue? What are preventative care I can do for my truck?
Best Regards.
Do you think I am doing the right thing?
Yes you need to maintain the transmission, but you probably won't get rid of the whine (and eventual failure).
Have you had other people reaching out to you with the same issue?
Yes we've had several. You can find them by typing UA80 into the search box.
The advice has been to avoid these vehicles.
