Got transmission out today....seems the trans shaft is just a tiny bit wiggly...is that normal?? And slave cylinder looks newer....my truck when drivable was revving higher than what truck would go....id put it in 4th gear to start out and it would just sit there.....is this bad clutch or transmission...how could I tell
New clutch package while you have the trans out. Replace everything with new parts; clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing.
If there was no grinding noise inside the transmission when it was in gear and you were revving the engine, the clutch friction material was probably shot and it was just slipping instead of transferring torque to the tranny. Do as @Doc says and basically rebuild the entire clutch system. Then you won't have to worry about it for a long time.
