1997 Camry Cruise Control malfunction

Hey Scotty,

Our 1997 Camry 4 cylinder with 140k miles has a cruise control issue. The cruise active light comes on so i know the switch has power. When you depress the lever to set your speed the car acts like cruise is engaging then the cruise immediately shuts off. I checked the brake switch and it is operating properly. This car idles so smooth you can't even tell its running. It rolls down the highway the same so I don't believe there is a vacuum leak anywhere. The cruise was working normally before. Do you think the cruise stalk could be bad? Id hate to disconnect the airbag if you have any other ideas.

A small vacuum leak could be compensated for by the fuel injection computer. The car is 24 years old so vacuum lines would be suspect unless recently replaced. (I'm assuming that being a 1997 model it uses a vacuum-operated servo that works the throttle.) Also check to see if if the cruise control cutoff depends on the brake light switch or if it has its own. If the car has manual trans there will also be a cutoff switch on the clutch.

Could be something deeper of course but you want to start with the simple stuff first.

I go with simple vacuum leak too.
