2002 Lexus RX300 Gear shift (PRNDL) stuck in Park

Hello. My father's car ('02 Lexus RX 300) has a gear shift (PRNDL) stuck in park. In order to put it in reverse, you need to adjust the amount of pressure applied to the brake. When you find the "sweet spot" in the pressure applied to the brake, the gear shift will move. Is this a simple fix I can try, or should I take it to the mechanic?

You probably need a new neutral safety switch.  Available everywhere.

Thanks for the fast response! I'll look into it.

The brake switch is acting up.

I appreciate the response.

Also check the interlock between the brake and gearshift. The fact that you need to fiddle with the brake to unlock the shifter suggests that the mechanism is worn or out of adjustment, or a switch that triggers it is not working properly.

It looks like it could be the shift interlock solenoid.

That would certainly do it. Check to see if it's getting voltage but not operating.
