I am working on a 1997 ford f150 4.2l v6, when the engine is cranked it has a hard knocking sound coming from the engine and and the only codes that I got from my scan tool is a p0340 camshaft position sensor circuit break A. is the knocking sound caused by the sensor being bad or something else entirely?

no, sensors don't knock. the timing chain probably stretched or skipped
