We took it to a transmission shop, transmission checked out fine. No codes are coming up so assume engine is fine but it is very sluggish! Its a 4 cylinder so doesnt have much power to begin with but it seems to have even less than it should. My husband started working from home in March of 2020 so sometimes the truck was only drove once a week (if that often) instead of the 5 days a week when he went to work. I think he has changed the fuel filter. Maybe bad gas? Any known issues on these older Ford Rangers for being sluggish?
Update! We ended up taking everything off and checking timing, it was just a tooth or so off. The woodruff key was worn also which was a HUGE pain to remove AND it was a pain finding the exact size we needed (I think my husband found the right size online some where) Got it all put back together and it ran great after that! We got it sold! (We didnt want to sell it while it had a problem, we arent dishonest people!! We actually had someone interested in it and we turned them down after they came to look at it because we didnt know what was wrong with it! We didnt want to just guess so we took it off the market and got it fixed! <3 New buyer is happy with it!
Mileage? Engine? Codes?
I wouldn't say bad gas as he would've run out by now if he still drove occasionally since then, but as far as the filter make sure he actually replaced it.
Have a scan done to make sure the pump isn't giving out.
A tune up wouldn't hurt as it sounds like it doesn't get much attention.
