Hello Scottie how are you doing?
my daughter bought a 1997 Lexus LS 400
190K miles do you think it has a timing belt or chain, if it’s a belt and it breaks would it hurt the engine?

It has a timing belt

It seems to be a debate online if it's an interference engine

This list at least shows the Lexus 4.0 to be an interference engine:

Replace the timing belt as soon as possible.  Timing belts should be changed around 100,000 miles.  Even if it might not total the engine, a broken timing belt could leave your daughter stranded at a bad time and/or a bad place.
