1997 Toyota Celica

Hi Scotty! I just bought a 1997 Toyota Celica GT convertible 2.2L manual with 145000 miles. I love this car! When I start the car there is a rattling noise coming from the side of the engine where the serpentine belt is located. I removed the belt and the noise did not go away. I haven't taken the plastic timing belt cover off but I'm suspicious that it might be something in that area. Do you know what it could be? Also I live in Cincinnati and would love to make an appointment with you to look over my car. Can we make that happen? Thank you for all you do!

Slop is probably not the problem, but you might want to double-check that you don't have the cam timing one timing belt tooth off.

  1. Well generally it's the timing belt rattling I would advise you to fix that as soon as possible before something breaks I would not tell you to drive it all the way to Tennessee here

Hi Scotty! Thank you for the advice. I went ahead and changed the timing belt, water pump, idler pully, and tensioner pully. The noise is now gone and it sounds great! However, I feel like the car doesn't have the power it used to before the new parts. When I tightened the tensioner pully bolt I manually snugged the belt a bit tighter to make sure there was little slop. Could this cause the engine to loose power? Could I have done something else incorrectly? Thanks!
