My 1998 Toyota Camry V6 A/T 159,550 stalls randomly when driving. Sometimes it will start again and sometimes it won’t re-start. Most recently it ran 400 miles before it stalled and shut down again while I was driving. Towed it to the dealership, but after it was unloaded, it started and won’t stall again. They said it’s pulling up a communication problem code, but they can’t seem to figure out the problem. When it starts, the dash lights come on and shut off; runs normal for 30 seconds then the rpms drop from 1.5 to 0, the engine dies, the check engine, battery and gas dash lights come on, and the security light on the dash flashes red. I would appreciate any help! Thank-you!
The fact that the security light comes on tells you that the immobilizer is active. The key lost communication with the car antitheft system. Do you have a spare key to try? If not, find a locksmith to make you another key.
I have the original key and a valet key. The problem happens using both keys. Thanks.
So it seems it is an electronic issue with the car immobilizer system. Take the car to a pro who works on these systems.
Does it still have its original 24-year-old crank sensor?
I bought the car used so I don’t know. I’ll check into it. Thanks!
