Scotty I recently purchased a 1998 mazda protege with a 5 speed with 165k miles on it for 1,000 bucks. I wanted to know if it was worth replacing the clutch and timing and water pump , i have a buddy willing to do it for $550 just labor i get the parts, do you know if these engines can last a long time like a civic or corrola, i recently did a tune up.

What shape is the car in, overall?
Did you have it inspected before purchase? If not, get a full inspection first, then decide your further course of action.
$1000 is still not too late to pull out, if you inadvertently bought a clunker..
Yeah the car is good shape, just a bit of rust the rear doors , the side part under the doors, but the car only had one owner, and well taken care of, I’ll probably just keep maintaining it
Yeah nah, don’t sink too much money into it. Just keep using it until the point of no return (of rust).
i owned a 97 Protege 5 speed years ago. One of the best cars i ever had. the floor eventually rusted out so i got rid of it.
