I found a guy selling his 1999 Blazer for $500. Now he has been very upfront with me so far about all the issues. It has a radiator leak and the front suspension on the passenger side is shot, causing uneven wear. I want to buy this car for practice on DIY.

Replacing the radiator and shocks or struts wouldn't cost me more than $170. Do you think it's a good buy to try to fix stuff on it myself?

Sure, back in 1999 GM was making better cars and a 1999 Blazer is actually half decent. Plus replacing a radiator and shocks/struts is nothing, especially if you can find used parts. These days$500.00 for a car is nothing. It sounds like you are getting a really good deal.

For $500, yes.

Still, have it inspected by a good mechanic, before you buy it. Just in case there’s other, more sinister, damage/issues.

It still won't be worth very much when you're done. I don't think I would invest any money into it. One little accident, and poof. All your time and money just went down the toilet.

I guarantee it will cost you more than $170 to get it roadworthy.

Definitely worth it. When you get the car up and running you get a heck of a deal

Man I miss my 99' Blazer. Those are fun little trucks. If it runs, drives, and shifts OK, I'd buy it. You can get radiators dirt cheap on eBay and the suspension parts are pretty easy to fix on those. Make sure the coolant looks OK though, mine was gummed up and rusty looking, and it eventually led to a blown head gasket. Not sure where you live, but also check the frame rails and make sure they aren't completely rotted.
