1999 Dodge Dakota- mpg

I have a 99 Dakota with 3.9 v6 and so does one of my buddies. His gets 20 mpg and I only get around 10 mpg. But both of ours have a terrible ticking sound coming from the engine. How do I get better mileage?

Check air filter. Clean your throttle body. Change your plugs, look at ignition wires if you have them.

Is the ticking coming from the engine or the exhaust? My buddy had a dakota like that and it had an exhaust leak that ticked.

I would change the filters - fuel and air. See if that helps anything. Then try more expensive things.

I’ve thought that it could have been a leak in the manifold but if you accelerate you can still hear it at the same volume.

Sounds like an exhaust leak or could be a collapsed lifter.
