Hi, I am looking at a 1999 Toyota Solara V6 with 183000 miles and a 5 speed manual

- What things should I watch out for?

- were the Toyota Solara with 5 speed manual as reliable as the automatic cars?

- Anything else I should watch out for?

Thanks in advance

Hello!

I used to have a 2001 Toyota Solara SLE V6 Automatic with 183,000 miles sadly i got into an accident 3 months after I got the car and now have a 2004 Camry but I'd recommend it...GET THIS CAR BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE DOES!!! No problems whatsoever...only problem is, DO NOT put any fuel cleaners in the gas tank or the engine may act up...when I put fuel cleaner in my car, it caused my know sensors to act up but when I cleared the codes, it wasn't a problem anymore but other than that, no problems.

Hi @bradleylietz73, can you please copy+paste your answer into the "Your Answer" box below, thats where it belongs. Comments are used for clarification and things like that. Thank You.

I fixed it...I think...

Thanks for letting me know 🙂

Manual transmission Solaras were rarer than hens teeth, but they were just as reliable. You say it needs a clutch. If you really like the car and it is priced accordingly, it is okay to buy it. But just prepare yourself for the cost of replacing a clutch as there is a lot of labour involved in a clutch replacement. In order to access the clutch you have to drop the transmission.

If anything, the manual should be MORE reliable than the automatic.

You want to have a mechanic check it out for sure and make sure everything is ok. Also, don't pay too much for it.

Yea another thing I forgot to mention : The car needs a new clutch, the previous owner bought it for 3500 cad from a dealer and is now selling it 3 months later (Which kinda seems suspicious) ; He has put it up for sale for $2500 OBO. Should I still consider it or should I just pass on it?

What things should I watch out for?

Go to the Used Car Buying Guide there you can find information on buying used cars. You would want a mechanical inspection done.

Were the manual transmissions are reliable as the automatics?

Even better, back then Toyota manuals were nearly bulletproof.

Anything else to watch out for?

Keep up with maintenance if you buy it, take care of it, enjoy it, and you are always welcome to ask on the forum if you have any other questions. Good luck!

How much should I pay?

Not much, I'd say no more than $2500-$3000USD
