I love Scotty and agree with nearly everything he says. But there are 2 things he has talked about many times that I just can't agree with and I wonder if he lost his mind. I'd like to know if anyone else feels the same.
1.) Scotty is in lala land when he minimizes the performance differences between the 4 cylinder Tacoma vs. the 6. They are COMPLETELY different performers. Especially in an automatic. The 4 cylinder drives like a sick underpowered dog (1st time I borrowed step dad's I thought it was stalling out backing out of my driveway. Nope, just no torque. The 6 isn't crazy powerful but it is compared to the underpowered 4.
2.) Scotty's insistence that rust isn't a concern on most late model vehicles due to frame "coating" at the factory. This is nowhere near true. In upstate ny where I live, you see rust on every vehicle including Toyotas and Hondas. Oil undercoating centers thrive here for a reason. My wife and I have always driven Toyotas and Hondas, as have my parents. Wife and I get oil undercoated every year. Parents do not. HUGE difference. There is no magic factory coating rust cure.
Well strangely enough, my mother was in Buffalo with an 07 Corolla that hasn't rusted out. And it lives outside. It never goes inside a garage. Now. I never said that a 4-cylinder Toyota is going to perform like a V6. It will probably be outlasted in terms of how long it will run with less repairs. But it's certainly isn't as fast and can't tow a.nywhere near what the V6 can . But of course, if you get any kind of scratches on your undercarriage then yeah the salt will get inside and ruin it. You still have to rinse the stupid things off if you live in a real salt environment
