Hi everyone, I got a question about my dads 2000 Toyota 4Runner SR5. A couple of weeks ago, I was coming back from work and got off the highway and came to the stoplight. Once the light was green, I let off the brake and pressed the gas but the car just reved. This has never happened, so I put the car into park then drive again and it worked. This has happened a couple times since then and it is very random. If anyone has any idea or suggestions, if would help

How many miles on the car and when was the last time you changed the ATF?

Car has about 191,000 and I changed the fluid about 6 months ago

To me sounds like a transmission issue. I would drain some of the ATF and add Lucas transmission additive.

It happens so randomly and the car shift fine. The mechanic has had it for 3 days and has driven and nothing has happened. Could it be an electrical problem or a bad tcm.

They usually start random and then it happens all the time. You can check the TCM but you need a pro to check it for you.

That's usually a sign of a worn transmission. It doesn't sound electrical to me but you can have the TCM checked. If it were hard shifting/not shifting right, then that is when it is usually a TCM issue. But to free rev and lose gear....sounds like an internal problem.
