Hi, I have a 2001 Toyota Avalon XLS, with a 129,000 miles and automatic trans and the fuel gauge stop working correctly. So, I bought an aftermarket sending unit from Ebay and it still did not work correctly, so then I bought and OEM from Toyota and the problem was still not fixed. The problem is I fill the tank to full, but the dash gauge reads above full and after driving for a while the low fuel light indicator will turn on with the gauge showing half a tank full, and the tank is almost empty. How do I check to see what the problem might be. It's not the sending unit as this is the second one from the dealer. Thank you, any info, and help you can provide.
Check your wiring and grounding between sending unit and fuel gauge. You can also trace wiring from the sending unit to the gauge and see if resistance is within specification at the gauge cluster. 24 years is plenty of time for corrosion or other wiring problems to occur.
