- Hey Scotty! I have a 2001 dodge 3500 van. It has about 150,000 miles on it. I just bought the van and did all the check overs, and drove it on the highway for about 5 miles and everything was OK. Went back and paid the fella and on the highway after about 20 miles it dropped out of overdrive and wouldn’t let me re-engage it by hitting the O/D button on the gear select. About a 1/2 mile or so later, the transmission temperature light indicator came on. I was able to pull over immediately let the van sit for about a half hour. Once I started it back up all the lights were turned off with no check engine light it was driving perfect shifting like butter through all the gears. Once back up the highway speeds, the same issue happened again after about 5 miles “ this time with a check engine light on”.
- As a sidenote, if I keep it under 50 mph It has no issues at all. Transmission fluid is at the normal height that it should be, but it does look very fresh like it has newer fluid. It doesn’t leak trans fluid anywhere.
- I found a shop that will put a used transmission that has 143,000 miles with a 30 day warranty for $1100. I’m just not quite sure if it needs another transmission put into it because it drives and shifts like butter any other time.
- Any words of wisdom and advice would be greatly appreciated.

What is fluid level and condition?
While the trans could certainly be shot after 22 years it really needs to be properly diagnosed by a transmission expert using a professional-grade bidirectional scan tool to make that call.
