My 2001 VW Beetle has 312,000 miles and runs poorly. It jerks while accelerating and smokes pretty bad. While looking through the live data I noticed that the MAF sensor was reading 17.98 grams per second at idle, that seems very high to be such a small engine. Do you think the MAF sensor is the source of this problem or do you think it could be something else. My mechanic said that it was most likely a dirty fuel filter, I had it changed and it did not help.

What color is the smoke. Is it black, is there any codes, A faulty maf most certainly cause issues listed. Unplug you maf see what happens. If car runs better you have your answer.

The smoke is black and there are no codes. I will unplug it tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks

Black smoke mean running rich. Clog fuel filter, bad pump would cause lean condition. I would check maf first as said.  Check your live data and look at your fuel trims. Are both banks Rich or just one. If your running rich on one side that side is where the issue is. If both sides are rich then it's something that effects both like maf ECT ect. Unplug doesn't work 100% percent of the time . But I've used that method and it works 9 out of 10 times
