Hi Scotty

i have a 09 Lincoln Towncar that has 130000 miles on it and needs a transmission. I can’t decide if I should have it repaired or not. The cost for a new transmission will be about $2400 and it is rebuilt with a 12/12 warranty on it.   Sometimes when I turn the car off I hear a sound like an air compressor running for about 10-15 seconds which leads me to believe it may have something to do with the auto leveling system. Should I put about $2400 into the car for a rebuilt transmission?

thanks

Well those old cars like that were pretty good cars so I can see why you'd want to keep her running because I've seen those with 200K+ miles still going down the road.

Heres the problem with Transmission rebuilds. Almost no one knows how to do them properly and so you're gambling completely unless you go to someone whos a season pro at rebuilding exactly these types of transmissions because it can be done. Just most of the time you pay all that money for you to have MORE transmission probs and be back at square one.

BUT something to consider is if you can find a used transmission and its from someone reputable even if you have to buy it online... That's what I would do because then you don't have to worry about your rebuild exploding or slipping because they didn't rebuild it properly. Plus that car's transmission was in multiple models and quite popular so it shouldn't be that hard to find a good used one since they sold a TON of them. The bad thing is either way your gambling but used > rebuilt unless the rebuilder is an absolute PRO.

Hopefully you can find a used one and it be cheaper to swap out over a rebuilt. Good luck on your transmission hunt/fix.

Get a rebuilt trans from a reputable company like Gear Star, Monster and TCI with a warranty.  This is all they do.  A used trans is a poor gamble.
