2002 Dodge neon 120,000i

have a 2002 Dodge neon..and when I put it in reverse it makes a knocking noise but in drive it won't.....it sounds like it's coming right from the top of engine where valve cover is....it's a 2.0 engine. Not sure why it would do it in reverse and not drive.....any suggestions?

Thanks

It is of course not unusual for a transmission to develop a problem in reverse only.

Noises can telegraph all over a car.

That car is well past its use-by date. Check for bad engine and transmission mounts as well as worn CV joints, and pray the problem is not internal to the engine or transmission.

It does have bad motor mounts. It shifts fine and smooth in every gear going down the road. When I'm stopped and I take off it makes a rattling noise kinda like a paint can would when being shook..then kinda goes away down the road. But like I said in reverse it makes a loud knocking I would swear it's coming from top end....but maybe it's coming from somewhere else I just can't see where. But there is at least 2 bad motor mounts.... because motor moves back and forth when put in gear

well, there you go. Replace the mounts
