hey I bought a new rack and pinion for my 2002 Dodge neon...what is the best way to center it....for the home mechanic

in order to center my rack and pinion before I put it on the car I've watched some videos about it......can't I just measure it on both sides and if the measurement is the same on both sides it would be centered? Seems quicker and easier

Sure, you can do it that way. The only problem is sometimes you get them centered like that but you're not able to get the shaft into the steering rack cuz there's no room to center it and then move it around enough to get the shaft back on. A lot of times your adjustments will move when you start wiggling it all around
