2002 Envoy RPM gage stopped working. It is not required but what are the basic things to check so it can be fixed?

I know it's more often than not the actual tachometer unit in the dash breaks there are no user serviceable parts. Everything's run by computers these days and it doesn't even have a fuse the fuses for the whole dash and if the rest of the dash works it's not a blown fuse
