I see a 2002 Nissan Maxima w/58k mi. for $3800.00. Is it a good buy? Is that too old of a purchase? Are they expensive in parts and repairs? What mileage is too high to buy for this year and the 03's?

Stay away. The quality was not very good and they are very expensive to repair when things break. Fun cars to drive....when they work.

Too old and too much money. Get a Toyota or Honda with that money and you will be much happier.

They were pretty reliable in that generation and that is low miles. Just realize those are high maintenance and that is WAAAY too expensive.  I would not consider any over 130 150k miles, but then again, I would not pay over 1500 bucks for one either. I had a 1994 Nissan Maxima, and when it was 15 16 years old, the engine would stall, it would not start, on the highway the transmission would fall apart, it would shut off while going down the highway. If you do consider it though, have a mechanic check it out. If you absolutely want a Nissan from that era, get a Nissan Sentra 1.8, those are very reliable and less maintenace than the Maxima.
