Hello, I have a question regarding the toyota sienna.
So I am thinking about buying a 2002 toyota Sienna with 120k miles for $3,500 (Private Seller). I really want to purchase it and use it as a daily driver, however I have seen many reports on the NHTSA site about random acceleration with the throttle body on toyota siennas in general. These reports are made on the very first model of the siennas as well as models all the way up to 2010. I've seen reports where people are just sitting in the parking lot with their sienna idleing and all of the sudden their sienna would autonomously accelerate very fast and end up in a accident.
Should I be worried or not? If so then is there a way to prevent random acceleration?
As long as the parking brake works & you have the presence of mind to shift into neutral immediately, I wouldn’t really worry about it.
It wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me, but just something to keep at back of my mind when handing over the vehicle to another driver.
Is there any way to prevent it though like cleaning the throttle bay or replacing the part that causes the random acceleration?
You could regularly clean the throttle body, however no matter what is causing the unintended acceleration, shifting into neutral will immediately stop the problem. Here’s what Scotty has to say -
Oh I didn't know Scotty made a video on random acceleration, I'm glad he touched base with this problem because it is a series problem that needed to be addressed. Thank you for answering my question!
No worries.
