Shocks and Springs

Scotty, I have the same question for two different vehicles: I want to change the front shocks on my son's 2014 Chevy Express 15-passenger van and the rear shocks on my mother's 2001 Toyota Sienna van.  Am I in any danger of "releasing" the springs on either vehicle?  I'm concerned that the shocks might be holding something together that would release the spring if the shock is removed.  Thanks!

If you’re still having second thoughts about doing the job yourself, it’s best to just take it to your mechanic.

Edited due wrong info.

In both cases, these are actual shocks and not struts.

Just looked up your suspension diagrams. My bad.. it is a strut indeed. I don’t think you should have any trouble replacing it on the Sienna. For the van, I’ll let others who have experience with vans answer.
