2002 VW beetle 235,000
I have a 2002 VW beetle....it has a 3 second delay going into drive and it pops out of gear going down the road then goes back in gear every once in awhile....shifts in every gear going down road.....is transmission ok

Obviously not. When is the last time it was serviced?

There's your problem.
If I drain out the fluid and flush it the transmission will definitely go out....so maybe it's fluid low or just wore out
Over 2 decades and 235K miles, never having been serviced - certainly worn out.
