2003 Chevy Impala, Advice for replacing valve lifters

My car started making a ticking sound today, and we're pretty sure that the problem lies in our lifters. It's a 2003 Chevy Impala 3.8 liter, automatic with 82 000 miles on it, and we are planning on fixing it ourselves. However, we have seen a ton of mixed reviews in terms of which brand is best for lifters (Comp Cams or Melling). What would be your recommendation of brand/do you have experience working with either?
Also, any tips/recommendations about the job itself or about the valve cover gasket and manifold intake gasket, as well? (Since we are doing all the work to change the lifters, we're hoping to change those, too.)

Don't guess, verify the problem. Fuel injectors, for example, can also make ticking noises. Replacing valve lifters is a big job you don't want to do unless you have to.
