My mechanic replaced plugs, coil, sent me to have two catylitic converters replaced which I was told were destroyed by time and a rich fuel mixture. I am now trying Techron mass air flow sensor cleaner then a half tank of Chevron gas with a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. I will replace the air filter, which was recently changed but picks up dust here in the desert. Does anyone have any other ideas? Help!!
Codes? Live data?
Get live data with a scan tool, specifically you want to see the fuel trims and how much air the MAF sensor is telling the PCM is going into the engine. O2 sensors upstream and downstream of the converters should have tripped codes for catalytic converter problems if they did go bad from long-term term running rich. Bad converters aren't always a stand alone problem. Unless they're broken inside, they're usually a symptom, not a problem. Might want to find a new mechanic if he's just guessing with parts.
