I've got a 2003 Mazda Protege5 Hatchback with 163,800 miles on it and a 5-Speed Automatic transmission running on a 4 cylinder 138HP DOHC Engine. It's got an issue where I'll step on the gas and I'll hear a faint squealing noise coming from either the upper wheel-well or the outsides of the engine comp. It has a check engine light for an evap. system leak and a battery light for a voltage regulator issue; Neither of which I think are associated, but I thought I'd include that.
Thanks,
Matt

Check the fan belts pray it's a fan belt or it's loose or one of the bearings is worn and not a transmission noise. See my video finding the source of car noises Scotty
