2003 mitsubishi eclipse gt with 230,xxx miles for 1500$. What do you think?

Not a smart move. Those have transmission issues in your case, it is way too many miles. With that being said, if it drives and shifts fine, I would pay maybe $500.
What about an Ford Focus zx3 hatchback with 122,xxx miles for 500$ but needs a new clutch.
If it runs and drives, why not. I would say the focus is much better than the Mitsubishi.
