2003 Silverado Z71 won’t pass smog in California

Hey Scotty. Love your you tube channel. You give great advice and make me laugh. I recently bought a 2018 Tacoma and need to sell my 2003 Chevy Silverado Z71. It has just over 208k miles and probably won’t pass a smog check here in California. At least, not without replacing one of the catalytic converters. It’s probably only worth 3 or $4,000 and I don’t really want to spend that kind of money just to sell it. I just found out you can’t sell a vehicle in California (private party) without a passing smog check. Any advice? By the way, watching your videos is a main reason I bought my Tacoma. I love it. I appreciate any ideas.

  1. thank ya sir.

If you're going to move out of California, could you take the chevy with you and then sell it in a different state? Also, I don't think it would cost too much to get a catalytic converter for it, though I could be wrong.

Find someone who imports rust-free western vehicles into salt-belt states. There are a lot of people in those areas who would love to buy a solid older truck that just needs a catalytic converter. (In areas with no emission testing they wouldn't even have to bother with the cat.)

Try selling it in Arizona or Utah or some surrounding state. I don’t know how laws work there or if that’s legal but I highly doubt that it would be illegal. Your other option is to maybe try and sell it to a dealer but you’re going to get less for it but then again you wouldn’t have to go to other states to sell it.
