Repairing a transmission leak

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5XT Limited Wagon with a 4-cylinder turbo engine. The car has 176k miles.

Recently, I have inspected this vehicle with a mechanic and he said it is leaking transmission fluid. However, he suggested not to fix this because the leak is dripping a very small amount of oil, and fixing this in a 178k mileage car might break the transmission as then he need to refill it with new transmission fluid after the fix.

Now my question is, did the mechanic suggest me right? Or there is a hidden trick to fix this even though the mileage is so high?

Thanks in advance.

How much fluid are you losing? Where on the transmission is it coming from? Is the transmission fluid burnt or gritty?
