My 2004 buick park avenue has 185,000 miles on it...and the fuel gauge will bounce from empty to full like crazy...only when the gas gets low...could this be the float on the fuel pump?

Not per say the float but quite possibly the contact swath it travels on might have a tiny open circuit area giving to this problem: but probably yes the float Assy. I’m pretty sure you can pull that one out from behind the back seat without too much trouble and test it or change it if a float Assy is available for that module .
