Is the under spray rust proofing worth the money and does it actually prevent rust? I just purchased a Hyundai Palisade, and of course the dealer is trying to up sell me in the finance office by trying to sell me rust proofing for $1500. Is this something that actually works. I do live in the north east, and during winters take my cars through the car wash once a week, and my other car is currently 13 years old and never had any rust proofing.
Appreciate any advice.
Jim
The general consensus is that rust proofing can prolong the life of automotive parts IF rust has not already taken hold of the part you are rust proofing. If there is already rust then the rust proofing will simply trap the rust underneath it making the oxidation worse overtime than it would be otherwise. There are an abundance of videos out there featuring experiments with different products and whether they work or not and how well.
Rubberized rust proofing IS used by the factory on new cars in rust prone areas.
If concerned about winter salt you could elect to spray underneath with Fluid Film or similar product before the start of each winter season. The $1500 "undercoating" offered by the stealership is clearly a ripoff. It's probably the same stuff you can buy in Walmart for a few dollar per can.
most are crap and should be avoided because they'll make the rust worse
I know that Toyotas do not need but I'm not sure about Hyundai.
What was your other car?
